This development, which the EU had consistently called for, responds to the urgent need to allow humanitarian assistance and organisations to reach Yemenis in need without restrictions. It is also timely, coming a week after the UN placed Yemen at its highest level of humanitarian emergency. A major food crisis is looming for the 80% of Yemenis requiring assistance

The EU calls on all parties to abide by the terms of the truce, allow full and unimpeded access for aerial, seaborne and land shipments of aid, in line with the principle of neutrality, so that assistance can be distributed across the country, in particular to those areas most affected by bombardments and military operations in Aden, Taez, Saada, as well as in the capital Sana'a
The EU underlines once more the need for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and international human rights law

The humanitarian pause provides an important opportunity to decisively restore the conditions for inclusive negotiations without preconditions in order to implement the terms of UNSC resolution 2216. Only a broad political consensus can provide a sustainable solution to the crisis, address the unprecedented humanitarian situation, and tackle the scourge of terrorism in Yemen
