Eritrea Releases 15 Yemeni Fishermen Detained for Three Months
Eritrean authorities released 15 Yemeni fishermen from the Al-Khokha district of Hodeidah province on Friday, following their detention for approximately three months. The fishermen were apprehended while on a fishing trip in the Red Sea's territorial waters.
The released fishermen have reportedly departed Eritrean territory and are heading towards Al-Khokha district, having completed all necessary release procedures.
Sources indicated that the release was facilitated by mediation efforts undertaken by Yemeni fishermen's representatives, which successfully secured their freedom.
The fishermen had embarked on their routine voyage from the coast of Al-Khokha on April 12th aboard a fishing vessel. Contact was lost shortly thereafter, and it was later confirmed they were being held by Eritrean authorities.
Recent years have seen an increase in incidents involving the detention of Yemeni fishermen while engaged in their work in the Red Sea. This trend highlights sporadic aggressions against fishing boats, including detentions carried out by Eritrean authorities in certain Red Sea littoral states.
