Maritime security units have issued an early warning regarding imminent threats to commercial vessels and oil tankers operating in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and southern Red Sea. Intelligence indicates a significant escalation of security risks in these critical international waterways.
The PTOC Yemen Maritime Security Unit, in a statement dated July 19, 2026, reported receiving "high-risk" security information suggesting a potential operational coordination between Somali pirates and Houthi elements. This collaboration could pave the way for attacks targeting commercial ships and oil tankers.
The potential threats include acts of piracy and hijacking, as well as direct targeting of vessels using fast boats and drones. These activities are anticipated in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, and southern Red Sea, particularly around the Bab el-Mandeb strait. Vessels heading to Yemeni ports or transiting near the Yemeni and Somali coastlines are considered at heightened risk.
The unit urged all vessels and maritime shipping companies to enhance their security readiness, immediately implement established ship security plans, and maintain maximum safe distance from Yemeni and Somali coastlines. It also advised against sailing at low speeds in high-risk areas.
Furthermore, prompt reporting of any suspicious movements or approaches to the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES force and relevant maritime authorities was recommended. The warning underscores the necessity of treating this alert with utmost seriousness and adopting all requisite preventive measures to safeguard lives, vessels, and ensure the continued safety of navigation in the region.
