Taiz Central Prison Director Detained Over Unauthorized Transfer of High-Risk Inmates

The Taiz Court of Appeal Prosecution has detained Colonel Essam Al-Kamel, director of the Central Prison in Taiz, pending an investigation into the unauthorized transfer and release of high-risk inmates without judicial oversight.

Local sources indicate that the detention follows revelations that detainees accused of serious crimes were moved from the facility under irregular procedures, raising significant concerns regarding the legality of the operation and the authorities responsible for authorizing it. The provincial police chief subsequently referred Al-Kamel and several other prison officials to the public prosecution, which has issued arrest warrants for additional staff members involved to facilitate a comprehensive inquiry into the breach of protocol.

Reports suggest that the inmates were relocated under the cover of darkness to alternative sites, including the Al-Nahda and Bakathir schools, amidst ongoing clashes in the areas surrounding the prison. The relocation was reportedly conducted without the necessary logistical support or security infrastructure, resulting in deteriorating conditions for those incarcerated.

Concerns have been further amplified by allegations that two inmates, identified as Wajdan Al-Soufi and Mukhtar Fazea, were released from custody shortly after being moved, despite facing charges for grave offenses. Additionally, local reports confirm that eleven other inmates escaped from the Al-Nahda school facility last Thursday, prompting urgent demands for a transparent investigation and the accountability of all officials involved in the security failures.
